A STEM topic you might hear discussed often is coding. In this context, coding, also known as programming, is the process of writing instructions for a computer/machine to perform tasks or solve problems. The applications of coding go far beyond building websites and computer software. Coding skills are critical for a number of STEM fields. Starting to learn the fundamentals of coding at a young age can be instrumental in STEM and general education for children. This is why Code.org started the Hour of Code program. In this blog, we’ll talk about what Hour of Code is, how your child can get involved, and why coding is so important!

What Is the Hour of Code?

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

How Is Coding Beneficial for My Child?

A background in coding is needed for a variety of careers including web development, software design, programming, data science, cybersecurity, and more! If your child has expressed an interest in any of these areas, getting a headstart on coding knowledge can be a critical component of their education.

But what if your child isn’t interested in one of those fields? What if your child isn’t interested in STEM at all? That’s okay! Coding can still develop skills that are useful in any field of study and different parts of life! Coding can help your child develop strong logic and problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, an adaptable understanding of technology, and resiliency. These are skills that can not only carry through them through different subjects and careers but all areas of their lives!

Can My Child Participate Without Going to an Event?

Yes! While it’s common for participants to attend events in their community or at school, Hour of Code has a variety of self-guided activities for all ages and experience levels. You can find information about each activity on the website including how long it takes, the topics discussed, and the accessibility options available. If you’re a teacher, homeschooling, or just interested in how these activities apply to your child’s education, each tutorial includes what standards the activity aligns with.

Where Can My Child Get More Hands-On Coding Practice?

If you’re looking for in-person groups where your child can get experience coding and seeing how coding is integrated into different STEM fields, the Police Activities League of Egg Harbor Township & Atlantic County has what you’re looking for! We offer a variety of STEM workshops, clubs, and teams throughout the year that incorporate grade-level appropriate applications of coding.
